Bonfire Night and why do Britons celebrate it?

Once a year on the 5th of November British skies light up with fireworks, why do you ask?

Well, because it’s Bonfire Night a.k.a. Fireworks Night, a.k.a Guy Fawkes Night and the story goes way back to 1605, and it might have something to do with an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

If you’d like to join Londoners this weekend to celebrate alongside them, here’s a great list of events happening all over London (some are FREE).

And if you’d like to be able to hold a conversation on this subject (or show off to fellow Londoners), here’s a little bit more on Bonfire Night a.k.a. Fireworks Night, a.k.a Guy Fawkes Night; there’s even a rhyme!

“Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!”

Have fun and stay safe!
