During my college application process, I knew I wanted to study at a school with a Graphic Design program as well as a study abroad component. My study abroad requirement (I made it a requirement) was fueled by my love for travel and exploration. Thankfully, I got accepted to SU’s Communications Design program, which offered the opportunity to study in London. Throughout the first and second years of my major, I often imagined what it would be like if I was accepted to study abroad; two and a half years later, I was booking my flight to London. As cliché as it sounds, that moment felt like a dream come true.
Coming to London a few months later has been thrilling, but also worrying because none of my close friends came with me. Naturally, I’m a shy person and it takes me a little bit of time to get comfortable around people I have not met before. Being in London for 3 weeks now, I’ve found myself outside my comfort zone and I’m glad I have, because this way, I have been meeting new people. I’m sharing a home with five other students who were previously strangers. We’ve been going around exploring together and I absolutely enjoy their company. I’ve only spent a short time in the city, but I’ve already tried Moroccan, Lebanese and Malaysian cuisines and have been on a boat ride on the Thames and visited a few other places.
In addition to my studies, I’m working as a work-study student in the SU London Program Office, which presents another great opportunity as it comes with a number of perks, but what I enjoy most is the warmth and friendliness of the people I am working with.
My semester abroad has been off to a great start and I’m looking forward to moments, trips and people I will encounter in the UK and Europe.
