Being new to both SUL and running an internship program, I wanted to find out the honest truth from the students how they felt about their placements, so I sent out a survey. The first question asked how the internship met expectations – an overwhelming 87.5% said it either met or exceeded them!
When asked about their favourite part of the placement, over half cited their co-workers and what an inclusive environment they found it to be. Other upsides included delivering original work and being given autonomy to work on meaningful projects.
On the downside, because of the autonomy some students worried whether they’re doing a good job and sometimes the work is a little boring. However we found that by asking for more challenging work, this didn’t last long!
Finally, when asked what advice they would give to future interns, here are a few of their quotes:
“I would encourage more students to do internships, since you will be experiencing London in a different way from all of the other students in the program.”
“Do it, do it, do it, do it, do it…I am in the midst of an amazing experience that will help diversify my resume and broaden my professional experiences.”
“Although it is an enjoyable experience, it is a big commitment so only do if 100% sure and willing to commit.”
” I have had ups and downs in my internship but I have always had someone to guide me and lean on when I was wavering. I would not trade this experience and opportunity for anything.”
